Games Workshop's Master Mould-maker & Miniature Caster | Anthony Epworth in Conversation

An often under sung, but utterly essential role for any miniature manufacturer is that of the mould-maker and miniature caster. Working with highly technical materials and technologies Anthony Epworth has been at the cutting edge of the art and science of miniature making since joining Citadel in the 80s. Sharing stories about his time at Citadel and Games Workshop, Bryan Ansell's Foundry, and ...

    It's such a shame to introduce them by only mentioning their games workshop exploits. That's such a Warhammer fanboy thing to do, especially considering all their best work and their Magnum opus is in their own historical company.

    Warmaster had a renaissance thanks to 3d printing. There's a ton of companies doing minihammer stuff these days. People love it since small figures take a little space, are faster to paint and are easier to transport. Rick Priestley reused the rules for Black Powder.

      I love my metal minis, but recognize 3d printing has made it much easier to collect and personalize your armies, and have more dynamic poses than metal casting. Daemon armies particularly benefit from this.

    I used to play at the US headquarters store. I remember when Warmaster came out. It may have a good rule set but no one was interested. For months they used to have a table with it set up at the front, and no one wanted to play it. It just wasn't a good fit and other projects could have used the support.

    Always thought this was the "correct" scale for Warhammer. Rank-and-flank games never quite fit at 25mm, whereas having the huge blocks of Infantry looks properly epic on the table. I'm slowly painting a bunch of Warmadyer I've collected over the years and it looks great on the table.

    Unpopular Opinion: GW can make some fantastic models (thought it's hard to justify the price tag). However, their wargame rules are, at best: Mediocre. They'd be better off licensing the IP to other companies to make their rules for them- and have variations of their war games. GW could then just focus on making models.

    • @Ethnarches
      @Ethnarches День тому

      @danharris8805 Miniatures are more important to me than playing, I love painting and collecting them. I have plenty of rare old miniatures from the 80s and 90s, hundreds, so I'm sure I can find an army of original Warmaster miniatures. Rarity and being difficult to find hasn't stopped me before either, all the models I own are OOP and over 20 years old. So no, it doesn't mean I won't get to play it. I have no interest in 3D printed models or really even plastic ones, well some old ones are alright.

    I know space marines sales alone eclipsed all of fantasy's sales but this was the death stroke for my gaming group. (18 of us) We had all given up on 40k at third/fourth edition and fantasy was our weekly game. We were all in our 30s and power buyers. (When the new skaven book came out I dropped thousands in a fortnight to get an army together and that wasn't uncommon) but AOS was too much of a departure and no longer a big battle game. We all walked away from ttg as a whole at that point and that's really sad. Occasional blood bowl or necromunda is all we play whenever we play these days... so many dusty armies....

    One very important thing for me was changing how all the background narrative went from an "in-world" perspective back to a detached "eye-of-god" perspective. Though, to be fair, this had already crept in during late 6th edition. Seeing as this has been the standard both before and after 6th ed, it probably makes more sense to talk about 6th ed as an outlier. Either way, for me, this moved the background stories from being colourful and exiting and awesome to something rather formulaic and stale and boring. It didn't help that all the story progress of 6th ed was ignored/retconned as you mentioned. It became even worse and more stagnant with 8th ed, I struggle to read the background of an 8th ed army book to this day. Background used to be story and narrative in 6th ed, in 7th/8th it morphed into product description. This was kind of my falling out with the old world background, and is also the reason I don't care for TOW now...

    All I know is we had a game, with 8th. Then we were given a steaming pile of half baked BS. The agreement had been changed and i did not agree with the slop they were peddling. From what I saw of aos 2.0 they had made a game finally. Imbalanced AF so a game I had no interest in. When I can get almost 4k worth of models on the table in a 2k game. Someone has made errors. Tried tzeentch saying it was funny and painful is a half truth. The endless spell exploitation was funny. The list was painful. Honestly when GW dumped aos 1.0 out. I was already on my way out. I had been neck deep into warmachine for 5 or 6 years at that point. I was only playing whfb because friends kept on insisting. So for me walking away was easy. I had sold off 4 of my 5 whfb armies. I held onto my daemons for 2 reasons they work in both systems and they really don't change much model/unit wise. So if a friend ever wanted a game we could play. We also used them for dnd, 9th age and kings of war. Things changed when warmachine mkiii wrecked the community, I got dragged back into 40k... what I found with 8tb ed 40k, was pleasant enough. Then ironhands happened. Thar is when I checked out aos 2.0, slaanesh was busted, khorne needed morrals not a daemon army your mortal woes sre nit my problem, tzeentch was a troll army for the player and opponent. And i still hate nurgle. So i just quit GW.
